Sandbox

Sandbox is a iOS browsing app that is ideal for an educational setting.  The only way a site can be reached is by a teacher "whitelisting" a site in the browsers setting.  This way no inappropriate sites can be reached and students can stay on task.  Also, a Plist can be created to administered for a wide number of devices.

Yahoo Axis

Yahoo Axis is a new free web browser/extension that reminds me a bit of Chrome/Safari.  Oddly enough,  for a desktop computer it is an extension for your favorite browser, ie (Chrome, Explorer, Safari) or a stand alone app for a mobile device.  What makes Axis neat is the ability to browse on one device or computer and then pick up where you left off on another (almost how iCloud works).  Also, it has a nice way of displaying visuals w/out leaving the page or when typing in a search query.

Zoodles

Zoodles is a excellent free browser/web environment for children. Zoodles has it all...from a safe internet kids mode, to educational games, parental dashboard, etc etc. A parent can control and monitor everything their child is doing online. Plus, since it is all inside this "safe" environment kids can interact in a safe way w/ videos, storyboards, art, etc etc.

Rock Melt

Rock Melt is a new browser that was designed by the people that brought us Flock. This is a browser that is built around social media and any user of Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, will feel right at home. This is because of innovative interface that allows users to control the content which goes on their browsing window's edges. Imagine being able to chat w/ your FB buddy's while tweeting and browsing a different web page all on the same screen.

Bumper Car

I first tested Bumper Car about 2 years ago when trying to find a "safe" browser solution for students. Well, Bumper Car 2 is now out and after testing this out I decided to report back my views.

Bumper Car is a Mac based browser designed to keep kids "safe" on the internet. This is done in many ways, one of which is Bumper Car's unique Start Page design. At this page a student can guide their bumper car to one of the many sections: math, science, fun & games, or into the "Mystery Tunnel" which takes them to a random kid's site.

Another great feature of BC, is the ability to filter/control anything on your browser. You can select a default by Age/School level, home use, etc. and edit the black/white list to your desire so nothing inappropriate can be browsed to. The amount of settings that you can control are mind boggling (time of day can browse, java script, etc.).

For more info click here.

BTW, this is all done at the browser level and not the server the way most filters work, so this is really ideal for home use. I downloaded the demo which lets you try 14 times before having to pay the $29.99 fee.
