Word Stash

Once again Free Technology 4 Teachers has found an online gem, Word Stash. This is a great site that allows users to "stash" (save) words and create lists. These lists can then be quizzed on. Also, there are a quite a few options to enjoy such as: listening to the word, sharing words via links, viewing examples of the words in sentences, etc etc.

WS can best be described as half a dictionary and half a vocabulary builder.

I highly recommend checking out Word Stash by clicking here!!!

Ninja Words

Ninja Words is a new site that I just read about on Richard Byrne's excellent blog. NW is an online dictionary which is very easy to use and quite good.

What I like so much about NW is that it tracks a user's history so you can refer back to words. However, you do have the ability to empty the history if you don't want to keep a record of that. It reminds me a lot of Apple's built in dictionary w/out the ability to cross-reference.

Below is my example...

OneLook

OneLook is a site I first read about on Larry Ferlazzo's great blog. It is a reserve dictionary which means it searches references for words that have definitions conceptually similar to the words you search for.

It may sound confusing but when you starting using it you'll get the point. It's a pretty interesting site because it indexes a lot of dictionaries so you can check a specific one if you so choose, or use the reverse look up at any time by typing in a colon before your search (ex. : web 2.0).

Below is a pic of my reverse look-up of Technology Integration in Education...

Visual Dictionary

Visual Dictionary by Webster is such a great resource for schools and in time could end up being the ultimate online dictionary. My only reason I say "in time" is because it is still relatively new and there needs to be more terms/words added before I would use it consistently. For example, I did a search on a bunch of technological terms, and until I made it very vague say w/ the word technology or computer, nothing came up. Although, what VD does have is quite robust; 20,000 terms w/ contextual definitions and 6,000 images.

Visual Dictionary has such an abundance of options for the teacher/student this is a definite resource that every educator should check out. For instance, there is a game section which is great for labeling pictures and so on. Also, there is a School Lesson Plan section on a variety of subjects for ages 4-12 and Highschool. For me personally, my favorite section is the "Tools" section which lets a blogger/web designer grab the code and use any image in their site.

I highly recommend giving Visual Dictionary a look, you'll be happy you did!!!

BTW, I did test out the filter/content aspect of VD and noticed that you can't pull up any inappropriate images/terms (even bad medical terms). This is great for schools who need to abide by CIPA/COPPA compliance. Although, I would need to see a strict policy in place before I let students start using this un-assisted.
