50 Math Sites and Apps

Throughout the last few years I've compiled quite a few lists of my favorite sites/apps for a variety of subjects.  Mobile learning and BYOD (bring your own device) is making it easier for students to learn, especially in the subject of Math.

50 Math Sites and Apps

  1. 4 Dice: Fraction Games - A great iOS app for learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.  This game meets Common Core Standards and has blue tooth capabilities to allow for two players across multiple devices.
  2. 5 Dice: Order of Operations Game - A neat iOS app for practicing "order of operations" where the answer is giving and students need to figure out the equation.  Some nice features include the email feature for teachers to track students ability as well as a nice interactive whiteboard to help figure out the problem.
  3. ABCYA - A wonderful site/apps (grades K-5) for Math, Reading, and more.
  4. AplusMath - A nice site for Math games, worksheets and flashcards.
  5. BuzzMath Middle School - A fantastic iPad app for Middle School students wanting to learn and practice their Math skills.  Some nice features is when a student gets an answer wrong BuzzMath shows them the correct answer and how to solve it.  Also, supports "differentiated instruction" as well as a website w/ a teacher portal for managing and tracking students.
  6. ClassPad - A new free online Math tool, that creates a digital scratch board to solve any math problem.
  7. Cookie - A great site w/ lots of educational games for Elementary schools including Math.
  8. DimensionU - One of my favorite sites/program for K-12 for developing Math skills in all areas.  This site uses cutting edge technology to reinforce Math skills in 3D games in safe competitive environments.
  9. DragonBox - A excellent multi-platform site for teaching students Algebra in a fun and unique way by starting out using pictures instead of numbers.
  10. Education Galaxy - An innovative online platform for grades K-6th, that helps students achieve success in any number of core subjects including Math.
  11. Fiete Math Climber - A nice iOS game to help students w/ basic Math skills such as: addition, subtraction, and more.
  12. Funbrain - One of the most popular educational gaming sites on the web.
  13. Grid Lines: Ordered Pair Game - Grid Lines is a very unique and challenging game which has students plot order pairs/points on a four quadrant grid.  This is great for upper El Ed and MS students and has blue tooth capability for multiplayer.
  14. iKnowIt - A rather new site that is quickly become of of my favorites for interactive Math problems grades K-5th.
  15. IXL - One of the most popular sites for Math for Grades K-8th as well as for learning Algebra and Geometry.  Not only does this site have an educational portal for student tracking and reporting but tons of lessons to choose from as well.
  16. Kidz Page - A nice site w/ lots of fun educational Math games.
  17. King of Math - A interesting iOS game for Middle School Math where students answer questions and puzzles to level up their character.
  18. King of Math Defense - A wonderful Math strategy game for basic Math skills grades K-8, that has students defending a castle against monsters.
  19. Learning Games for Kids - A great sites w/ lots of games for education.
  20. Lure of the Labyrinth - A site designed for Pre-Algebra students to go on an amazing adventure to rescue their lost pet and avoid monsters.  Not only does this app have a wide variety of lessons for MS students it also is aligned to state standards.
  21. Fuel the Brain - A nice site w/ lot of different educational Math games to choose from.
  22. Marble Math - Is a great iOS app that has students playing the old fashioned marble tilt puzzle game solving basic math problems (addition, subtraction, etc.) plus decimals and fractions.  A user can either tilt their iOS device to move the marble or use their finger to guide their marble to the desired spot.  Not only is this game highly addictive it gets rather challenging in the upper levels.
  23. Math A Tube - A great resource for Math students/teachers for all areas of Math.  A person can not only find videos and worksheets, but explanations of all sorts of Math concepts (ie, Geometry, decimals, fractions, etc.).
  24. Math and Sorcery - One of my favorite iOS game for learning basic Math skills playing an old school 8bit style RPG.
  25. Math Castle - A super-fun iOS game for basic Math skills that has players defend a castle from a dragon by answering equations.
  26. Math Champ - A very innovative iOS app that turns a student's iPad into a "buzzer" to answer questions before their classmate.  This does require a teacher to "host" the game as well as setup a class list.  Math Chimp supplies all the Common Core Standard questions from a wide variety of Math problems.
  27. Math Game Time - A terrific site for grades K-7th w/ lots of educational games, worksheets, and videos.
  28. Math is Fun - A cool site for all things Math grades K-12 that has more then just equations to solve.
  29. Math Leaper - A fun iOS game w/ detailed reporting that has students jumping higher and higher while solving basic Math skills (grades PreK-8).
  30. Math Minute Madness - A wonderful iOS app that focuses on basic Math skills and has students trying to solve as many questions in a minute to earn stars so they can add animals to their virtual zoo.
  31. Math Playground - A great site for finding Math resources such as: word problems, games, worksheets, flashcards, and more.
  32. Math Rescue - A fun iOS game that has students learning concepts of rounding and estimations while putting fires.
  33. Math Run: Panda Chase - A nice iOS game for learning basic Math skills grades K-5 following the popular "running" mobile platform style.
  34. MathEdge - A excellent iOS app for young learners working on their addition and subtraction skills through the use of flashcards.
  35. Milestone Math - An interesting iOS app that uses self paced learning to help students w/ their Math skills.
  36. Money Math Duel - A fun iOS game for helping students w/ Math and learning how to make change.
  37. Mystery Math Town - This is one of my favorite and unique iOS apps for building Math skills.  Ideally this adventure is for kids 6-12 and focuses on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Students enter a town and try unlock levels and characters by not only solving equations but finding the variables to solve the given equation as well.  This game is highly addictive and has very high replay value.
  38. Numbers League - A fantastic iPad app for students 5 on up that uses basic Math skills to defeat a legion of evil super heroes.  This interactive comic style game focuses on Common Core Standards and can be used by students of all ages as it gets harder and harder.
  39. Operation Math - This is a very fun iPad app that focuses on the basic skills of Math while trying to stop an evil villain from stealing numbers by solving equations and locking his escape route.  OM is a great game for kids 5-12 w/ high replay value that takes them to lots of geographical locations.
  40. Ordered Fractions - A fun iOS game that uses dice to roll random numbers and then have students put them in boxes to create fractions.  Students then have to compare these fractions to put into ascending order.
  41. Play Kid Games - A very nice site w/ lots of fun and engaging Math games.
  42. Polyup - A new free site that uses Game Based Learning to help students w/ Math in grades 3rd-12th.
  43. Prodigy - A excellent innovative Math game for grades K-8 w/ real-time reporting.
  44. PurposeGames - A nice little site for educational games on a wide variety of subjects where teachers can create their own games too.
  45. RoomRecess - A wonderful site for elementary students to learn basic Math concept through a wide variety of educational games.
  46. Sakura Quick Math - Is an ideal iOS app for grades 1st - 5th that focuses on all basic Math skills. Not only does Sakura track students progress it allows for users to write the answer directly on the iOS screen.
  47. Skip Math: Skip Counting Games - A fun iOS app similar to Doodle Jump where students jump from platform to platform to count by numbers (i.e., 2, 4, 6, 8, etc.).  Another neat feature is the ability to take a picture of yourself and put it on the game character.
  48. Sushi Monster - A nice iOS app for practicing addition and multiplication facts.
  49. YodelOh Math Mountain - A super-fun iOS app that focuses on the basic skills of Math such as: addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division.  This game is a hoot and reminds me a lot of the Price is Right game where the mountain climber tries to reach the top of the mountain before time runs out.
  50. Zap Zap Math - A excellent site for Math grades K-6, w/ educational portal for student tracking and generating detailed reports.

Top 50 Sites/Apps of 2015

It's the time of year again for my favorite annual sites and apps.  This year's list will be a little different as I list my favorite 50 instead of 100.  The reason for this is not as many new learning tools came out this year compared to years past, while more current tools focused on regular updates.  However, that does not mean there are not a lot of new items to look through, as sites/apps for programming/coding, Math/STEM, and Game Based Learning played a predominant role in this year's list.  As w/ any of my previous annual top lists, all tools listed in previous posts will not be eligible for this years'.

  1.   * Seesaw - Excellent free mobile app (Android/iOS) for students creating digital portfolio w/ educational portal.
  2. Code Kingdoms - One of my favorite sites for learning how to program (Javascript) by drag-n-dropping blocks of code (i.e Scratch).  Also, has an abundance of lesson plans and students can learn how to create their own Minecraft style game.
  3. * Oncore - A free to use iPad app for teachers that acts like an all-in-one Learning Management System, where educators can assess students, take attendance, communicate w/ parents, and much more.
  4. Plotagon - A wonderful site/app for digital storytelling where students create animated movies (i.e Xtranormal) by typing a script.
  5. Grammarly - A terrific site for helping students w/ their grammar, spelling, and more w/ detailed reporting.
  6. * Sketch Nation - A great free site/app (iOS/Android) for creating games.  Students can also work on their STEM skills and learn the basics of programming.
  7. Ignite Teaching - An excellent free iPad app for Project Based Learning through collaborative digital presentations/projects.
  8. Help Teaching - A very nice site for educational resources, printables, assessments, and more.
  9. Class Compete - A super fun and innovative Game Based Learning system for grades K-8 in the subjects of Math and English.
  10. WhatsDue - A cool new free mobile app (iOS/Android) for keeping students and parents up to date on what is happening in the classroom.
  11. Modern Chalkboard - A great site for finding free Smart Board resources and tutorials.
  12. * Galxyz - An innovative mobile app (Android/iOS) for Elementary Science that is COPPA compliant and aligned to Common Core Standards.
  13. * Mystery Word Town - The excellent mobile (Android/iOS) app that uses Game Based Learning to help learn and spell words.
  14. * Box Island: One Hour Coding - A fun free iOS app for ages 6 on up learning the basics of coding.
  15. TenMarks - A very popular site for Math for grades 1st-12th that tracks student progress as well as helps teachers differentiate instruction.
  16. * Bloomz - Bloomz is a free (iOS/Android) app for educators looking to communicate w/ parents via mobile devices.
  17. * Monster Math - An excellent iOS Math game w/ high replay value that helps students learn their basic Math Skills through an innovative platform-type game.
  18. Versal - A nice site for creating interactive digital lessons, that is ideal for online learning.
  19. Learnteria -  A new site for educators looking for reviews on a wide variety items, such as: sites, books, apps, and more.
  20. * WonderBox - A wonderful free iPad app for students learning a number of different subjects (i.e Math, Geography, Science, etc) through use of videos, maps, images, and more.
  21. Story Shares - An interesting new site for readers grades K-12th.  Story Shares creates digital books that are customized per Reading Level.
  22. * Quiz Hero -  One of my favorite (iOS/Android) free apps that uses RPG game elements to learn a variety of subjects, such as: Math, Vocabulary, Science, etc).
  23. * Tickle - A fantastic iOS app to learn how to program by dragging blocks of code together, that works on items such as: Sphero, drones, etc.
  24. Quizizz - A excellent site for creating multiplayer quizzes where educators get results in real-time.
  25. CodeQuest - A fun iOS app that helps teaches students learn how to code in CSS or html, ideal for STEM.
  26. Choosito - A new and safe way to search the web for students and library resources.
  27. AlfaTyping - A great site for educators for students to learn how to type while educators track their progress.
  28. * Milk Hunt - A entertaining Math game for 1st-5th grade that has students collecting bottles of milk while answering different questions.
  29. * Make It - A nice iOS app for grades K-2nd for creating games, stories, slideshows, and more.
  30. * Flashsticks - An innovative site/app for learning a foreign language through interactive post-it notes.
  31. * Brownie Points - An excellent free iPad app for Math grades K-7th, that uses an incentive based learning system.
  32. CodeCampKidz - An interesting site for students 5th-8th learning how to code in html, Javascript, and more.
  33. myBlee Math - A nice free iOS app 5-12 yrs old learning Math.  myBlee not only tracks student progress but offers rewards and puzzles in a wide range of Mathmatical topics.
  34. Erase all Kittens - A unique site that has students "hack" through the levels of a game to rescue all the kittens.  A nice way to learn how to code and ideal for STEM.
  35. Lumio - Excellent site/company for Math games and resources, ideal for mobile learning or a 1:1 environment.
  36. JellyBean Scoop - An interesting new site/app (Android/iOS) for finding "true" stories divided into four Reading levels.  Be sure to check out JellyBean Writer too!!
  37. LearnBop - A great site for educators teaching Math in grades K-12 that tracks student progress and allows educators to differentiate instruction.
  38. FlipQuiz - A fun site for creating Jeopardy style game quizzes.
  39. * Spell 'till you Drop - A super fun iPad app that has students learning how to spell while playing through a game of building a bridge, w/ over 600 words included.
  40. * Code Blast - A nice introductory to problem solving by programming a rocket in this fun iPad app.
  41. Explain 3D - Is a innovative mobile (Android/iOS) app that acts as an interactive encyclopedia that has a wide range of simulations on topics such as electronics, machines, and more.
  42. Scoodle Jam - A great iPad app for grades K-6th ideal for Project Based Learning.  Students can create presentations, drawings, projects, and more as well as choose through lots of educational templates.
  43. Study Ladder - A wonderful site for educational resources and games on a number of different subjects.
  44. * Monster Physics - An excellent iOS app for kids ages 9-11 learning the basic concept of Physics by creating their own interactive creations.
  45. * Zap Zap Math - A cool free mobile (iOS/Android) app for self paced learning in Math.
  46. * NumberShire - A terrific site/app for K-2nd learning basic Math concepts that tracks student's progress and is aligned to Common Core Standards.
  47. * Counting Kingdom - One of my favorite iOS apps for addition/Math for kids 6-8 yrs old that uses the popular "tower/defense" style game.
  48. * SlateMath - A free iPad for young learners learning the basic concepts of Math and numbers, w/ over 38 different activities.
  49. Kidtopia - A nice safe COPPA/CIPA compliant search engine for kids/students.
  50. Telling Time w/ the Smurfs - A great and fun way for students to learn how to tell time through an interactive story w/ Papa and Brainy Smurf.

50 Web 2.0 Sites for Schools

Recently I've been experimenting w/ a bunch of curation sites that are beneficial to creating and sharing lists.  While exploring these tools I've been "fine tuning" my Web 2.0 list for schools.  I have created a list of 25 Web 2.0 sites for education over a year ago, but a lot has changed since then.  More sites have been developed and more tools are available to students and educators then ever before.

  1. 19 Pencils19Pencils is the easiest way for teachers to discover, share and manage web‐based educational content with students.  A teacher can create quizzes, websites, track students, and more.
  2. ACMI Generator - This is a great site for older students for digital storytelling and creating a storyboard scene w/ a script.
  3. Animoto - Create wonderful looking slideshows that includes, video, images, music, and more.
  4. Aviary Education - A safe private environment to use Aviary's suite of online tools for: audio, video, and image editing.
  5. Boom WriterBoomWriter is a supremely engaging creative writing website that has students reading, writing and assessing content in ways they’ve never done before!
  6. Classtell - A nice site for teachers to create an educational website.
  7. Diigo - Social bookmarking for teachers where they can create free student accounts.
  8. Dropbox - A great way to share and collaborate on documents on a number of different electronic devices.
  9. Edmodo - A wonderful safe/secure learning environment for teachers and students.  A nice all-in-one solution for education.
  10. Educaplay - A excellent way to create interactive multimedia educational activities.
  11. Every1Speaks - A learning platform where students learn through collaborative enquiry based learning.
  12. Gaggle - A excellent suite of online learning tools for filtered: emailing, messaging, forums, and more.
  13. Glogster - Creating collaborative and interactive posters in this safe environment.  A wonderful and very popular web 2.0 tool.
  14. GoAnimate - A terrific way to create custom animations w/ an educational portal.
  15. Google Apps for Education - Does it really get much better then this?
  16. Gnowledge - A wonderful site to create collaborative online quizzes, share resources, view others quizzes, and more.  Excellent tech support and tutorial videos as well.
  17. Grockit Answers - A great teaching tool to create a Q/A session for any YouTube video.
  18. Kidblog - A fantastic way to create a safe environment for students to blog in.  Everything is controlled by the teacher as a moderator.
  19. Kerpoof - Lots of educational activities can be found here such as: make a movie, draw a picture, and more.
  20. Kubbu - A free site for teachers to create games, quizzes, or crosswords and then share them w/ students and view/analyze their results.
  21. Little Bird Tales - A wonderful free site for digital storytelling that allows kids to record and narrate their story.
  22. Live Binders - Is a excellent site for creating an online binder to collect and share resources w/ others.
  23. MentorMob - One of my favorite new sites for curating the web into learning "playlists".  This is an innovative way to teach a lesson, unit, or any given topic.
  24. Mixbook - A great site for digital storytelling in a safe environment.  Educators get a discount on printed books.
  25. Musicshake - Legal, copyright, free music for every student in your school - created by students right from a browser.
  26. Myths & Legends - One of the best free sites around for digital storytelling in a safe environment w/ lots of characters, themes, and objects to choose from.
  27. PhotoPeach - An excellent for creating slideshows and creating and managing student accounts.
  28. PikiFriends - A fun safe environment for online pen pals for middle school and high school students.
  29. Pixton - A great way to motivate students by creating digital stories using this comic creator.
  30. PresentationTube - A nice windows app for creating presentations out of powerpoint slides.
  31. Prezi - A excellent site for creating zooming slideshows and presentations.
  32. Primary Access - A free suite of online tools for students/teachers to create digital movies, storyboards, and other activities.
  33. Primary Wall - A real-time collaboration tool that allows students and teachers to create a page of online sticky notes.  Great for mind mapping and brainstorming!!
  34. Skype in the Classroom - A great collaboration tool for classrooms to video/audio chat w/ other educators/students.
  35. SideVibe - Turn bookmarked web content into blended classroom lessons.
  36. SlideRocket - All you need is a Google Apps account to use this free tool to creating stunning presentations.
  37. SpellingCity - One of the best sites around for teaching and learning Spelling and Vocabulary.  A very user friendly and engaging site to use.
  38. Storybird - A fantastic site to inspire students to read & write through the use of digital storytelling.
  39. StoryJumper - A great site for digital storytelling where students can incorporate their own art, publish online, share w/ others, or order a print copy.
  40. SymbalooEDU - A wonderful way to organize educational sites into one location for students.
  41. Triptico - A great free tool for teachers to help create, share, and edit interactive lessons.
  42. ToonDoo Spaces - Create a private and safe environment for digital storytelling through the use of an online comic.
  43. VoiceThread - One of the most popular web 2.0 sites around for creating dynamic and interactive slideshows/presentations.  Also, another great tool for digital storytelling.
  44. Webspiration - From the creators of Inspiration comes this excellent web portal for creating mind maps, brainstorms, outlines, and more.
  45. Weebly - Create a free class/student blog or website.
  46. Wolfram Alpha - There is now an educational portal for Wolfram's computational search engine.  This portal contains dynamic textbooks, lesson plans, widgets, interactives, and more.
  47. Yacapaca - A nice free all-in-one solution for schools for creating quizzes, surveys, assessments, and more.
  48. YouTube for Schools - Access 1000's of YouTube videos in a controlled environment w/out having to worry about comments.
  49. Zimmer Twins - A great site for digital storytelling w/ an educational portal.
  50. Zoho Wiki - A nice site for educators to create online interactive content.

Top 50 IT apps

Being a huge advocate of lists, I was pleasantly surprised when I received an email from a writer for Information for Technology Degrees. He passed a long a post he did for top 50 free IT apps. After looking at the list I was happy to seem some that I have experience w/ in the past: Cacoo, Cacti, Nagios, Flow, etc.
