Motion Comics

Motion Comics is a nice site for digital storytelling that I just found out about from Larry Ferlazzo's blog.  Motion Comics lets users upload images and audio files to create a stunning digital comic.  Best of all, a user can publish a finished comic via link or generate an embed code making it ideal for education.  While still early, Motion Comics looks to be a good tool for digital storytelling.

I highly recommend checking out Motion Comics by clicking here!!!

Comic Book

Comic Book is a iPad/iPhone app ($1.99) that is great for making digital comics.  This is done by selecting your layout, uploading pics, adjusting the theme/styling, adding stickers/text and then sharing/exporting w/ others.  While not as detailed as some other similar apps such as Comic Life, this is still a fun tool to use for teaching digital storytelling.

Garfield's Comic Creator

Garfield's Comic Creator is a fun site that I just came across for making an online digital comic.  Like most similar comic creator sites a user can add: characters, props, text, etc.  While this site doesn't have a ton of options to choose from it is a fun site to use and an easy way to introduce digital storytellers to the younger students.

I recommend checking out Garfield's Comic Creator by clicking here.

Mai Nada

Mai Nada is an interesting site for making digital comics.  Unlike other sites MN focuses on having users draw their own comic.  Once a comic is done it can then have pre-set timings to allow the comic to animate on its own (think Comic Life movie export feature).  Keep in mind this site is also an online community so it may not be appropriate for school.

Charlotte's Web Comic Creator

Charlotte's Web Comic Creator is a fantastic site I just found out about from the excellent blog, The Book Chook. This is a great site to create your own comic from one of the best children stories of all time. As w/ most comic creator sites a user has the ability to choose a layout, add characters, items, text, etc. Also, a user can create a comic w/ stills from the actual book.

Honey Nut Cheerios Comic Creator

Upon having breakfast w/ my boys this morning I discovered on the back of their cereal box a comic creator for Honey Nut Cheerios. I have it a shot and found it to be a nice site to use w/ kids to teach them digital storytelling and how to create a comic. Everything that can be found in most online comic creators can be found here: drag-n-drop interface, ability to choose characters and backgrounds, and editing text.

I recommend checking out Honey Nut Cheerios Comic Creator by clicking here.

The only disclaimer I can give is, to unlock extra content you need a special code that you can only get from the back of the cereal boxes.

Write Comics

Write Comics is a fun site for creating your own digital comic. Like many other similar sites all a user has to do is add some characters, choose a scene, and then add some dialog to create their digital story. Although, not as robust as say Pixton or Comic Master it still is a nice site to use.

Give Write Comics a try by clicking here!!

Top 10 Sites for Creating Digital Comics

Creating Digital Comics has been one of my favorite thing to do w/ students when trying to integrate technology. While this can be done w/ any number of applications such as Comic Life or Toon Boom, there are many online alternatives (mostly free) that offer up a nice solution as well.

Top 10 Sites for Creating Digital Comics
  1. Pixton - Has an educational portal (paid) that is ideal for schools (no student email account necessary). Also, there are a ton of options such as voice recording, drag-n-drop interface, and importing/exporting features.
  2. ToonDoo Spaces - One of the most popular online comic creators that is very similar to Pixton, w/ the ability to create a private space for education for sharing/collaborating on comics.
  3. Comic Master - A very nice looking site that is user friendly w/ lots of features to choose from such as: backgrounds, objects, speech bubbles, etc.
  4. Bitstrips - Is a great site w/ an educational instance (paid) that allows students to create comics in a safe/secure environment.
  5. Stage'D - A great looking site for creating animated comics!!

Comic Master

Comic Master is a site I just found out about from the excellent blog, iLearn Technology. This site is similar to most online comic creators such as Pixton or Toon Doo. As w/ other similar sites, CM has a nice drag-n-drop user interface w/ lost of items to choose from.

PikiStrips

PikiStrips is a site that has been making some waves lately in the online world. It is a site that is similar to Pixton for creating digital comics.

While PikiStrips is a nice site for what it does, I would not recommend it for education, merely due to the fact of some of the inappropriate content for schools. There is a number of clip art that a person can select and some of them just wouldn't be school appropriate such as: Borat, body parts, etc etc. However, that being said I see this as a real nice/easy site to use and can see a teacher using it to create a digital comic for their class (via a screen shot).

Give PikiStrips a try by clicking here.
