Soundtrap

Soundtrap is a wonderful collaborative learning tool for making podcasts and music that I just found out about from Richard Byrne's excellent blog.  Soundtrap is an easy to use site that works on any mobile device to record instruments to create music.  However, a student can also use one of Soundtrap's instruments and begin to record sound.  Through their educational portal everything is "housed" in a safe environment and teachers can communicate via video for feedback or assign assignments.

Rhythm Friends

Rhythm Friends is a fun iOS for young kids wanting to explore music or work on their musicality.  The way this work is a child taps their finger to the beat on their iOS device to play notes in this musical timing game.  Notes will scroll across a screen a person must tap it as the note hits the line.  Good timing will draw flies to their frog (Earl or Pearl), bad notes will make the flies go away.  The goal is to collect as many flies as possible.

Booktrack Classroom

Booktrack Classroom is a new site/app that I just found out about from Richard Byrne's blog.  This is an interesting tool that allows students or teachers to add a soundtrack to their writing.

Here's a list of ways Booktrack Classroom is being used in education...
  • Narrative Writing – Students add music and audio to their original stories.
  • Informative and Explanatory Writing – Students compose essays and articles selecting suitable audio to accompany their text.
  • Literature Study – Students gain insight and increased understanding of the text by creating their own soundtracks for novels, stories, and plays they are reading in class.
  • Read-Alouds – Teacher and student led read-alouds are enhanced through the addition of sound and music to the chapter or act being presented.
Also, BC has a nice selection of free lesson plans to search through and is aligned to Common Core standards.

Musical Paint

Musical Paint is a wonderful iOS app for not only teaching students about different instruments, but it allows them to create digital art.  All a user has to do is click on a color and start painting to hear different instruments and sound.  Once a piece of digital art is completed it can be framed/saved or shared online.  However, my favorite feature of MP is the section for educators/parents that lists lesson plans aligned to common core standards.  This shows how Musical Paint can be used in teaching different subjects, such as Math, Writing, and more.

Piano Dust Buster

Piano Dust Buster is a great free iOS app that teaches kids how to play the piano.  My kids love this as they have to press on the piano key that germs land on to have granny dust them away.  As they do this they are learning to play the piano and keep tempo and timings.  It's a very fun game that also has adjustable difficulty levels for the more advanced player.
