Actively Learn

Actively Learn is a site I've blogged about in the past that is ideal for increasing reading comprehension or adding "depth" to any text.  AL reminds me a lot of EDpuzzle but instead of "making a video your own" it is "making reading material your own".  This can be done using any text and lets educators track student's learning and understanding of a passage through the use of asking questions, annotating, collaborating, and more all in real-time.  This is a great resource for teachers and easily lets them gauge a student's understanding, differentiate instruction, or even "flip" a lesson.

More updated features include:
  • Updated instruction for thousands of ELA, Science, and Social Studies texts
  • Text pairings for topics and novels that help teachers find content related to what they already teach
  • Videos that tie to academic topics, w/ embedded questions to monitor student comprehension
  • The ability for students to highlight key vocabulary right in the text and hear an entire text read aloud
  • A redesigned catalog and workspace to improve navigation and usability
Below is a brief demo video...

ThinkFluency

ThinkFluency is an oral reading fluency assessment app developed by a teacher for teachers.  ThinkFluency replaces the tedious paper, pencil and timer assessment with an app that enables teachers to quickly assess students’ Oral Reading Fluency Rate. ThinkFluency is easy to use, provides instant results with data that is easy to download and share, and is perfect for RTI and showing student growth. It comes with 6 passages each for grade levels 1-5, but users can add their own passages for the ultimate customized assessment tool. ThinkFluency gives users the option of going PAPERLESS. FluencyFinder 3.0

FluencyFinder the educational mobile (iOS/Android) app for assessing Reading & Comprehension has just released their biggest and most robust update yet.  Before educators need to choose between 1 of 6 passages (1st thru 8th grade) to assess a student's Reading level.  This was a bit limit for those that needed to use required reading material or those districts that uses Accelerated Reader, AIMS, etc.  However, now educators can create, delete, and upload any Reading/Comprehension passage & questions they want to assess their students with.  This makes it a great way to organize Reading lists for a student or class, and assess material relevant to that class.  Also, a user can switch between online use and mobile use as their data gets backed up seamlessly between the two.

FluencyFinder

FluencyFinder is one of my favorite iOS apps for educators. This easy-to-use app is ideal for assessing students’ reading fluency rate for grades 1st-8th. All a teacher has to do is download the app and start adding students. Once this is done, they go to the website (http://www.fluencyfinder.com/), choose a reading passage (currently 6 passages per grade level), and print it out. When the student is ready, the teacher hits “Start”. As the student reads, the teacher can easily track and assess their reading fluency by tapping a button as errors occur. After the student is finished, the teacher hits “Stop” and immediately receives instant, real-time results.

Also, the creators of FluencyFinder are continually adding improvements to this already fantastic product and will soon launch comprehension questions to accompany the reading passages. Teachers will be able to assess not only students’ reading fluency rate but their comprehension of the passages as well. Another nice feature coming soon is the addition of an export function, which will allow teachers the ability to share students’ results/data with the tap of a button, likely via email. And new additional passages, including excerpts from children’s literary classics, will be added this spring.

FluencyFinder

FluencyFinder is a Reading Assessment tool designed for the iOS for grades 1st - 5th.  This app was developed by educators to help save teachers save time testing and spend more time teaching.  This is done through a very innovative and user friendly interface that makes assessing quick, easy, and effective.

What makes FluencyFinder so great is how easy and effective it is to use.  All a user has to do to get started is download the app and start creating their class of students the mobile app.  Once a student is created a teacher can begin their assessment by choosing 1 of the 6 Reading passages designed for that grade level (30 total 6 per grade.  From the FF website a teacher would print out their selected passage and then have the student start reading while pushing the start button on their mobile device's timer.  While a student reads they would push the plus or minus button on their mobile device to track and mark mistakes.

That's it.  Once the student is finished the teacher would hit the stop timer button and get instant real-time results.  All of the student's data is tracked and stored via the mobile device.  FluencyFinder does it all so it saves teacher's time and tracks their results while teacher's can focus on assessing student's reading fluency.  Also, FF is great for Special Ed and ESL/ELL for those needing help or reinforcing the English language.
