Virtual Technology Teacher

Virtual Technology Teacher is a wonderful site created by a IT Coordinator dedicated to integrating technology into the classroom.  On this site you will find a number of free videos on a number of different subjects in technology.  These videos are in Quicktime format and can be downloaded.  However, VTT offers school districts a paid solution for teaching technology lessons.  This can be very useful for districts that are in a financial crunch and can't afford various technology staff or other paid technology video solutions such as Atomic Learning.

Walkme

Walkme is an interesting site that allows users to create walk-throughs of their site.  This is done by installing a plugin and then going through your site and adding text/content to where you want the user to "get help".  For the end user the walk-throughs are done via a speech bubble interface.  Also, there is a nice way to track walk-through data via analytics.

Show Me Whats Wrong

Show Me Whats Wrong is a very ambitious site w/ a great idea. This would be a site my mother would love because it is designed for people who need help w/ their computer issues. For example, I would go to Show Me Whats Wrong, type in my name and email address and it generates a unique URL.

That URL is then linked to screen-cast-o-matic which then automatically starts recording the person's screen who received the email. (It doesn't happen right away, there is a start button, and the person has 5 minutes to record). Then that person can email back their problem which is in a screen cast and this way I would be able to actually see what is going on w/ my mom's computer. It might sound a bit complicated but in actuality it is very easy to use.

Top 10 Self Help Sites for Technology

When using technology it is inevitable that one is going to need help. A lot of valuable time can be wasted trying to search online or find someone that can help meet your technological needs. That being said, I decided to create a Top 10 list that will help teachers and students become "their" own tech. These sites focus on all aspects of technology (OS, hardware, software, etc) and should help that person find what they are looking for and save them that valuable time.

Top 10 Self Help Sites for Technology
  1. Atomic Learning - Probably the most popular educational solution for self help tutorials on a variety of technology areas.
  2. Woopid - A excellent site for 1000's of free video tutorials on technology. Also, a person can request a tutorial that is not found on the site.
  3. Learn That - A great site for free tutorials on a variety of subjects included technology.
  4. Lynda - A paid site similar to Atomic Learning that focuses on software training.
  5. Tech University - A wonderful site for the Mac user/enthusiast.

  9. VTC - 1000's of video tutorials that can be viewed online or purchased as a CD, does require a monthly fee.
